Biking Fun

Last weekend, the three of us loaded up and headed to beautiful Lopez Island for a bit of biking and camping. And as always, the ferry was a big part of the fun.

Although, Evie June seemed to be digging her little world inside the bike trailer, complete with her book, magnet sketcher, and three little pigs set.

Still, we managed to persuade her to get out of the trailer a couple of times. Here we are at a spot called Shark Reef. We didn't see any sharks, but plenty of seals and crazy tide currents.

We posed for this family photo, interrupted by her request for a potty. A few minutes later, she'd happily completed her first in-the-woods squat. We're ridiculously proud.

That night, we were blessed to camp on the property of Colleen and Ethan. Colleen was the teacher who hosted the school visit I did on the island this spring. And they proved even better hosts at home, where they treated us to a feast from the outdoor fire pit. Yum.

And then it was off to bed. This was Evie June's first actual night camping in her new sleeping bag. She seemed pretty cozy, and slept happily all night.

The next morning, three-year-old Quinn was at the tent with an early wake up call and invitation to play a bit before breakfast.

After breakfast, we headed down to the beach for a some rock-turning over. Here Evie June holds one of the tinier shore crabs. There was no coaxing her to handle the bigger ones, or poke the anemones.

Then it was back in the trailer for another long ride back to Lopez village for lunch. And a bit of island dancing.

And then back to wait for her big boat ride.

We made it back to Anacortes and our waiting car excited, a little tired but ready for more bike touring adventure. Who knows, maybe as soon as Evie June can actually pedal, we'll be camping our way across the country--and stopping for a night in YOUR backyard!

UPDATE:

She can pedal! Maybe inspired by the weekend on the island, or simply benefiting from the extra opportunity to study the technique, Evie June amazed us with another milestone--pedalling her own bike! Notice how she keeps an eye on the broom handle--to make sure its not connected to her bike. She gets a little upset when we assist. Independence has its price!

First pedaling, then no training wheels. Before you know it, she's not only wanting the keys, but wanting dad to leave her alone while she goes places with guys. They grow up way too fast. BTW... Benjamin is only a year or so older. Would you like to arrange something for the future?
