Reader Girl
So we're doing our best to raise a reader. And we sort of think we're on the right track when she sequesters herself in her room for ten or fifteen minutes at a time to "read," , goes into giddy handclapping glee when she realizes it's library day, or starts using book metaphors to make sense of the world. For instance, if we're going through a list of the things we did during the day and I forget, say, our trip to the post office, Evie June interrupts me and says, "No mama, you missed a page!" Often it takes me a few tries to figure out what event was significant enough in her mind to merit its own illustration in the picture book she imagines of her day--sometimes its the candy cane she got to nibble or that she answered the phone.
And she's a pretty good memorizer of books. This one, Emily Gravett's Monkey and Me, is one we picked up at the library on Monday. Enjoy.

PS: EJ is also working on her repetoire of disguises, perhaps inspired by the variety of characters she's met in her beloved stories. Here she goes incognito over morning cocoa with her "Hip cop from an 1970's police drama" look. Note to self: must remove Starsky and Hutch picturebook from her shelf.

So great! Would you believe that's a new favorite book around here too -- only we got our thin paper copy of it from a box of Cheerios! Henry just watched this movie with me, and he was most impressed by the big size of Evie's book.

It kind of blows my mind that she can talk, much less READ!
Be careful, Jen, she could be your editor one day. :)
