Nocturnalis Babius

Parenting is a tricky business. Already, I feel a little like that lady that hung around all those gorillas for a couple of years so she could understand them. Motherhood is not all that different in its bewildering sense of trying to figure out what's going through that perfect little head of hers. Although I'm starting to discern the nuances of Evie June's cries (gas pain does have a slightly higher pitch than, say, the whimper she utters when we play a Van Morrisson CD), I still think the lady in the jungle had a more direct mode of communication with the apes than we have with our daughter.

Which is why we've not yet been able to fully communicate the concept of day and night. At this point, Evie June thinks her eyelids are for keeping all that pesky daylight out, and that nighttime is the fun time. Below is rare evidence that the girl is not entirely nocturnal.

We've received plenty of advice (most of it conflicting with the last advice we heard) on how best to address this. My favorite technique? The suspiciously "Gorrillas in the Mist" tactic of licking her forehead and blowing on wet spot. It seems that's just one step away from picking bugs out of her fur and eating them. That doesn't mean we haven't tried it though.

Not the bug thing.

See what sleep deprivation can do?

Aww, take heart guys! She'll figure out how to sleep just in time for her teen years. Maybe wait for the fur to grow and then it will work? Well, maybe there's another technique that will be revealed to you soon... a wise sage once told me, "Prophecy comes at the edge of exhaustion." Hehehe it was you Jimmy that told me that! Thanks for having us for your baby shower weekend, we really enjoyed seeing everyone.
